NPCs (and PNPCs)!
Bright Souls is not just about the main characters who exist to be the focus of its stories and be the stars of the show! No, Bright Souls also lets the side characters shine! Aside from the Global NPCs(GNPCs) that exist in the world a player can make side characters that can progress and grow alongside their OCs. These NPCs are entirely private and can only be controlled by the player that created them or by thread partners of that player with their express permission. This permission can be noted before or after the content of a standard RP post and does not need to be done publicly.
How do these Private NPCs(PNPCs) work? Well, that is actually very simple. A PNPC is built much like a standard character with only one difference. They have set limits to how much XP they can spend at any time with a certain caveat.
OCs create PNPC Points called PNPC Tokens each time they reach a new Reishi Class – each class awards 1 PNPC Token. At E Class, all OCs automatically start with 1 token which they may wish to use or save, as Stronger NPCs need more tokens allocated to them to let them reach a higher-class level. When an OC reaches S- Class they gain a new PNPC Point every 1,000XP beyond the threshold that will allow them to keep improving their NPCs, but no single OC (even an S-Class one) can have more than a total of SIX PNPCs.
Plan this wisely, as once a PNPC Token is used up, it cannot be returned without archiving and removing the PNPC it was spent on!
That way, somebody who reaches Class B will have 4 PNPC Tokens that can be spent to create 1 PNPC at class B, or 2 PNPCs, each at class D.
The process is really quite similar to applying for a regular OC, except that there is a required bond between the NPC and OC. As they are tied to an OC the points that they are allowed to spend cannot go above the threshold of that OC’s XP total. If you are applying for an NPC that is a class below the OC then they are limited to the class threshold. (refer to the table below).
For example, an OC that has 1200 XP will be Reishi class D. That gives the PNPC 1200XP to spend on its Attributes, skills, and any manifestations a player wants to give them, but the PNPC can never surpass the OC.
Reishi Class | Tokens Needed | Points To Spend |
E | 1 | 400 |
D | 2 | 800 |
C | 3 | 2,000 |
B | 4 | 4,000 |
A | 5 | 6,500 |
S | 6 | 10,000 |
Any PNPC, however, does not generate points in the same way an OC does. At the current stage, PNPCs are intended to be solely for the purpose of enhancing our storytelling skills and progressing our OC’s plot by enjoying further interaction in threads, not to generate more points. This means that if a post features a PNPC, but no OC is present, no points will be awarded for that specific post.
That said, anyone is free to engage in an entire thread with their PNPC and have their OC completely absent if they wish to, as long as they understand that they will not be awarded any points for it – but let’s be honest, we’re not here for the points!
These Personal NPCs can be applied for NOW!
